Is blogging dead? Do people read blogs anymore? This is something I’ve thought about a lot the past few months.
I started this blog as a freshman in college in 2008, right at the beginning of the blogging boom.
Back then blogging felt much more personal. It felt like I was actually following friends. I looked forward to reading their updates and actually read the posts too, not just looking at the photos.
Bloggers would post about their daily lives, their outfits, the recipes they were trying. And while that content is still popular today, it’s much more commercialized.
A lot has changed since blogging first became a thing. Social media grew, influencing how we interact with and digest content. Blogging, a longer-form content, while still relevant, seemed to become oversaturated and saturated with ads.
Is blogging worth it anymore?
For me, blogging has always been a personal creative endeavor. It’s a way for me to express what I’m learning, thinking, and feeling. It’s a creative outlet, a place for connection, and a place to explore ideas. So for me, yes, absolutely. I’ve taken breaks from blogging before when the inspiration ran dry, but this space has always been here which I’m thankful for.
Should I start a blog?
If you want to, yes! Why not? I think first and foremost we should do what we feel drawn to do. Not for anyone else, but for us. I’d recommend thinking about why you want to blog, what you want to blog about, and how you’ll gauge the success of your blog. For me, success is just showing up. It’s not getting comments, it’s not website traffic, it’s not X amount of posts per week it’s literally JUST showing up. Your goal might look different, but I’ve found that having at least some type of rhythm to blogging has helped me enjoy it more.
Is blogging still relevant in 2022?
I think so! The bigger blogs (think A Cup of Jo or Man Reller) feel much more like publications these days, I would love to see a resurgence in personal style/lifestyle bloggers. People who are doing it for the love of the medium.
Have you ever thought about starting a blog? What’s holding you back?
Coming from your Blogging vs Social Media post ~
Man I miss the days of – like you said – reading, really reading about friends lives and people’s experiences and lives.
It’s hard to find blogs like yours now where people are updating raw material. So many of the bloggers I used to follow either switch to only social media or it’s all sponsored posts. I would trade “Top 10 XYZ” for someone’s personal stories.
I agree, I miss reading about people’s daily life updates! We need people to bring it back : ) Have you thought about blogging?
